  • Looks out window at: three bus stops, 2-5 pubs, a row of restaurants, and a busy shopping street at ground level *

Reader, those things were all there before I moved here. They're a big chunk of the reason WHY I moved here. 17 years ago …

ossmkitty ,

@rsynnott @cstross Yup, very American. Where I live in a middle-size US city, there's nothing but single family houses for as far as the eye can see. It's a 10 minute drive to a pub, a 15 minute drive to a restaurant, and a 20 minute drive to a bus stop.

cstross OP ,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@ossmkitty @rsynnott If it's a 10 minute drive to the pub and a 20 minute drive to a bus stop, I can kinda see why American attitudes to alcohol and social drinking are w-e-i-r-d. (I can't even count the number of pubs within a 10 minute walk of here on my fingers. Or the bus stops.)

Whether or not you install GNU/Linux on it today, your new will eventually lose support. Thanks to the impressive work of project (@AsahiLinux), it will not need to end up in the landfill once it does.

Does anyone know of a way to buy an EV that doesn't relentlessly spy on the driver/passengers and send the data to whoever the carmaker feels like selling it to?

Related: Does anyone know of a service in the Bay Area that will disable all the surveillance that was, without my knowledge or permission, built into a 2008 Prius?

rikard ,
@rikard@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor Googled "open source electric vehicle" out of curiosity and found https://www.openmotors.co/evplatform/ which might be part of the solution. It's theory where you are looking for a concrete solution @dangillmor but still interesting.

Incoming! A severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm is expected to arrive around 02:00 UTC Friday night / Saturday morning.

At least 5 Coronal Mass Ejections took place over the past 24 hours, directed towards Earth. These originated from a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster (NOAA region 3664).

There is potential for disruption of communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations.

And bright auroras as far south as Alabama!

A summary of how space weather affects spacecraft and satellites.

Single event effects (SEE) cause bit flips in memory, FPGAs, CPUs, ...

Increased spacecraft drag and orbital decay due to the thermal expansion of the Earth’s upper atmosphere during space weather storms.

Attitude control disruptions caused, e.g., by large storm-time magnetic field fluctuations can lead to loss of cmd & control.

And there are lot more satellites in LEO now than in 2003 😨

    I would love to get your thoughts and feedback on my from my latest book, The Challenges of Being Me. Do you like it? Does it capture your attention? Without knowing anything about the book, what genre would you say this cover best fits? @bookstodon

    thorncoyle ,
    @thorncoyle@wandering.shop avatar

    @dickrubin716 @bookstodon I’ve found that with book cover design, you can’t stray too far from genre expectations. Sure, do it with your twist, but a book cover is the very first discoverability tool we have. Book cover must telegraph genre, which means it has to look similar enough to other genre books that people get a clue.

    @dickrubin716 @thorncoyle @bookstodon It's rare to see a black and white YA cover, and the ones that do tend to have brightly coloured accents. For example Jennifer E. Smith's books have some doodles and a playful font to indicate YA.

    / whistleblowers claim abuse of Palestinians at detention centre

    Three Israeli whistleblowers working at the Sde Teiman desert camp say military responsible for series of abuses.

    […] The witnesses told the facility, some 18 miles from the Gaza frontier, is split into two parts: enclosures where around 70 Palestinian detainees from Gaza are placed under extreme physical restraint, and a field hospital “where injured detainees are immobilised, diapered, and fed through straws”.

    Not the Onion (though if it was on that site we'd all have a good laugh at the fine satire).

    Sadly, but predictably, it's in the New York Times.

    "Stormy Daniels as We Had Never Seen Her

    @dangillmor @jeffjarvis Notice the byline. Clothes communicate in court. Not only is it “not the Onion,” it’s about a topic frequently analyzed in court cases. Is it funny because of the subject’s previous career? Or is this just boys laughing at silly girl stuff, like paying attention to what a public figure is communicating with her hair, makeup, and clothes?
